Now, use this website to explore the various Green Book sites of North and South Carolina, find advocacy resources, and map out your own journey through history.
About the Project
The North Carolina African American Heritage Commission (NC AAHC) in partnership with the WeGOJA Foundation, is spearheading an innovative project to identify and develop infrastructure for mapping and marking extant Green Book sites. The aim of this project is to create easily accessible information that will enable the exploration and research of existing Green Book sites. The project will also serve as a blueprint for a Green Book extant sites historical marker program.
To ensure the success of this important initiative, the NC AAHC launched a series of virtual and in-person working group sessions in South Carolina and North Carolina. These sessions brought together historians, business owners, and other community stakeholders to gather insights and inform design. Throughout the summer, participants worked together to help preserve community histories and continue the legacy of Black community safeguarding.
As a result of their commitment and hard work, the project has made significant progress, including the proliferation of local information and archival access, and research. By working together, these dedicated individuals have echoed the efforts of hotels and service providers that supported Black travelers during the 20th century. The Green Book project of the Carolinas is dedicated to preserving Black community histories. Its success would not be possible without the support and dedication of its participants
Use this map to explore notable sites featured in the Green Book throughout the Carolinas. Each hub highlights a group of locations that were still standing when this project began in 2020. Unfortunately, ongoing construction projects across the state have resulted in the demolition of some of the Green Book sites mapped. If you discover that a site has been demolished, please notify the commission at ncaahc@dncr.nc.gov.
