Ocean City: A Community of Firsts

On the coast of North Carolina, on a one mile stretch of Topsail Island sits the community of Ocean City. A place where families could vacation, own property, and enjoy the beach in peace during a time where few places could be enjoyed by all. Threatened by hurricanes, the rising tide, and development sits a community that remembers its history, culture, and legacy. A community of firsts. Theirs is a story of hope and resilience.

This video was created as a collaboration between the NC African American Heritage Commission, the Ocean City Beach Citizens Council, and the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
