Black History Month Read-in 2022

Celebrate literature and hear from North Carolina authors with the 5th Annual Black History Month Read-In! The North Carolina African American Heritage Commission, in partnership with North Carolina State Historic Sites, the State Library of North Carolina, the Richard B. Harrison Community Library, the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Top Teens of America Wendell Chapter, and Shelves Bookstore is presenting the Read-In virtually for 2022.  View our curated list featuring selections for adults, young adults, middle grades, and young children.

From the Curator

My goal was to curate a reading list that celebrates the creativity of African American writers, specifically our ability to write amazing stories about any subject or topic. As I worked on this list, I kept thinking about Jamaica's national motto, 'out of many, one people', which they accepted in 1962 when they gained their independence from the British. This list is my attempt at showing that although African Americans are one people, we have many stories to tell.
