T. Daniel Tourist Home
T. Daniel Tourist Home was listed in the Green Book as “T. Daniel, 912 E. Market” under “Tourist Homes” in Greensboro from 1938-1941; “T. Daniels—912 E. Market St.” under “Tourist Homes” in Greensboro from 1947-1954; “T. Daniels, 922 E. Market St.” under “Tourist Homes’ in Greensboro in 1955; and as “T. Daniels Tourist Home—922 E. Market St.” in Greensboro from 1956-1957 and 1959-1967. The tourist home was featured in every edition of the Green Book that included North Carolina.1
T. Daniel Tourist Home was operated by Taylor “Daddy Jack-Rabbit” Daniel. Daniel operated a tourist home from his residence at 912 E. Market Street and a cab company from 615 E. Market Street. Daniel lived at 912 E. Market Street by the late 1920s. He walked from Oxford, NC to Greensboro, NC in 1895 to find employment. He was operating a horse-and-carriage transportation service by 1904 and became a licensed cab driver in 1914. By the early 1940s he also offered bus transportation, though he stopped driving altogether following a stroke in 1946.2
The Green Book noted an address change for T. Daniel Tourist Home in 1947. Daniel’s address in the city directory did not change to 922 E, Market Street until 1956. Instead, 922 E. Market was another Green Book business called Shoffner’s.3
Taylor Daniel was born in Oxford, NC in 1963. In his early years, Daniel worked as a porter for William Jennings Bryan’s campaign train and for UNCG founder Charles McIver.4
Daniel’s first wife, with whom he had two daughters, passed away in 1934. His second wife, Carrie, died in 1958. Taylor Daniel passed away in 1963. The final year that 912 E. Market or 922 E. Market appeared in the city directory was 1963.5
