Moore’s Service Station was listed in the Green Book as “Moore’s—613 Ramsey St.” under “Service Stations” in Fayetteville from 1947-1955.1

Moore’s Service Station was originally owned by Robert Daniel Moore Jr. It was also known as Moore’s Sinclair Service Station and Robert D. Moore Jr. Filling Station. By the second year the business was listed in the Green Book, however, the filling station had changed hands. The 1948 Fayetteville city directory lists Williams Service Station, owned by Orange and J. Waddell Williams, at 613 Ramsey Street. The business changed hands at least two more times; it was listed as “L&L Service Station” in the 1953 city directory and as “McMillan Service Station” in the 1956 city directory.2

Robert Daniel Moore, Jr. was born in 1913 in Washington, DC. His parents were from North Carolina and moved their family back to their home state by 1920. Moore grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina. He earned a teacher degree and began a career in Wilmington as a teacher. He moved to Fayetteville in 1940 and opened Moore’s Service Station the same year. Moore married his wife, Tahita, in 1942; the couple separated in 1947, around the same time that Moore sold the service station.3

Moore’s Service Station is no longer standing.4
