Jack’s Snack Shop, also known as Jack’s Cafe, was listed in the Green Book from 1951-1955 as “Jack’s—213 Hillsboro St.” under “Taverns.”1

Jack’s Snack Shop was located at 213 Hillsboro Street in Fayetteville. It was owned by Cecil Hales “Jack” Phillips, a white businessman who owned several businesses that catered to African Americans. In addition to Jack’s Snack Shop, Phillips owned a service station and grocery, a hotel, Plaza Theatre, Plaza Hotel, a supermarket, and the Crestview Hotel.2

Jack’s Snack Shop, also known as Jack’s Cafe, was advertised as selling the “best hot dogs for ten cents in town,” wines, and beer.3

Jack Phillips was born in Cumberland County in 1917 and was raised by his grandparents in Cedar Creek. He lived in Fayetteville his entire life; he and his wife, Blanche Burke, raised their children at 134 Hubbard Street. Jack Phillips passed away in 1972.4

Jack’s brother, Amy Phillips, owned another Fayetteville Green Book business, the King Cole Motel.5
