Mrs. Fannie Jeffries Tourist Home was listed in the Green Book from 1947-1957 and 1959-1967. It was listed as “Mrs. F. Jeffries—Mill St.” under “Tourist Homes” from 1947-1953, as “Mrs. Fannie Jeffers, Mill  St.” under “Tourist Homes” from 1954-1955, and as “Mrs. Fannie Jeffers Tourist Home—Mill St.” from 1956-1957 and 1959-1967.1

Mrs. Fannie Jeffries Tourist Home was located in Whiteville. Fannie Phillips Jeffries was a divorcee who began offering her home to lodgers by 1940. In the 1940 census four lodgers (a single person and a family of three) were living in her rented home on Mill Street. She was also working at a cafe, which may have been located in her home.2

By the late 1950s Jeffries had relocated to a home on Powell Street. There were no street numbers given for this street in the city directory until 1963, when Fannie Jeffries was listed at 103 Powell Street. This address does not exist today.3

Based on modern maps, public historian Lisa Withers theorized that this site might have been located somewhere along modern-day Power Station Street or Mearse Street in Whiteville, NC. Mearse Street is a continuation of Mill Street and property located in this area would be south of Clarence Street and east of Franklin Street as noted for Powell in the city directory entries. Power Station Street connects south from Clarence St. and is approximately 1 city block east of Franklin St.
