Mohawk Inn
Mohawk Inn was listed in the Green Book from 1950-1951 as “Mohawk Inn” under “Taverns” in Manchester. A street address was not included in the listing.1
The Mohawk Inn was a Green Book business located in Manchester, Cumberland county. The business was advertised in The Carolinian in 1949 and in the Green Book from 1950-1951. The inn was described as being “peaceful among the pines” and welcomed parties. A street address was not provided in any of these advertisements and is not yet known.2
The owner of the inn was George H. McDougal, Jr. (sometimes misspelled as “McDougald” or “McDougall). McDougal was born and raised in Manchester. He married Louvenia McKay in 1934 and the couple made their home on Murchison Road, also known as NC Highway 87, in Manchester. George also worked at Fort Bragg, first at the post exchange and later as a cook.3
George McDougal passed away in 1971.4
