Legion Home Restaurant
Legion Home Restaurant was listed in the Green Book as “Legion Home, 416 E. Cabarrus St.” under “Restaurants” in Raleigh in 1955 and as “Legion Home Restaurant—416 E. Cabarrus St.” in Raleigh from 1959-1967.1
The restaurant at American Legion Home Post No. 157, also known as the Charles T. Norwood American Legion, was advertised in the Green Book from 1959-1967. The restaurant hosted parties, banquets, and special dinners. Post 157 was located at 416 E. Cabarrus Street from 1949-1966.2
Post No. 157 was granted its initial charter in 1924 and its permanent charter in 1938. It is named for Pvt. Charles T. Norwood, the first Black soldier from Raleigh killed during World War I. The Post’s fifteen charter members were all veterans of World War I. Post No. 157 was well known for its Drum and Bugle Corps, which marched in conventions and parades. Other locations for the Post included East Hargett Street, the Raleigh Safety Club, and the Garner Road YMCA. Post No. 157 celebrated 100 years in 2024.3
